STATE CHAMPIONS

Winter Sports
Swimming and Diving
The Swimming and Diving program
finished another successful season,
placing in several statewide meets and
making a strong showing at the District
level, with the following athletes qualifying
for competition: Coleman McKinney,
Shelby Baker, Nathan Yoder, Eddy
Cordek, Suzanne Hrabowy, Abbey Moonis,
Elisabeth Saunders, Claire Alexander,
Lisa Deakin, Emily Durbin, and Anne
Marie Cummins. Suzanne Hrabowy and
Anne Marie Cummins qualified for state
competition, with diver Suzanne Hrabowy
earning all state honors.
Hockey
The 2011-2012 season was the most
successful to date for this young program,
with the team reaching its first 20 win
season in school history. The Stallions
qualified for the Blue Jackets Cup for the
first time, and the winter season saw the
emergence of the team’s first 50 goal
scorer, Joe Gray. Senior Tyler McClary
was selected to participate in the Ohio
All Star game (where he scored a goal
with a broken wrist) and was the DeSales
recipient of the prestigious Hobey Baker
Award. In addition to their success on the
ice, 6 members of the team also received
CHC All-Academic Honors: 1st Team–Tyler
Barrett, Danny Helin, and Nigel Mathias;
2nd Team--Kyle Ghiloni, Chad Janszen,
and Josh VanCuyk.
Girls Basketball
The Girls Basketball team, under second
year coach Brian Cromwell, won the
District Championship for only the fifth
time in school history. In addition to
winning the school’s fifth CCL title, the
Lady Stallions, who finished the season
with a 17-8 record, became only the
2nd team in DeSales history to win both
the District and CCL titles in the same
season. The lady cagers were led by
seniors Tyler Craig (2nd Team All District,
1st Team All CCL), Kelsey Albanese
(District Honorable Mention, 1st Team
CCL), and McKenzie Cook (2nd Team
CCL). Junior Miranda Johnson was also
named 1st team CCL.
Boys Basketball
Although they faced a lot of adversity
during the 2011-12 campaign, the
Stallions finished the season strong
with blowout wins over both Buckeye
Valley and Licking Heights in the state
tournament. They were led by senior
Charles Chandler (1st Team All League,
District Honorable Mention) and juniors
Darrien Scott (1st Team All League) and
Marcus Harris (District 10 All Star).
St. Francis DeSales High School has enjoyed a great deal
of athletic success over the years, but Saturday, June 2 is
definitely a day that stands among the most memorable
in the school’s storied history. Not many schools can
hold their 47th Commencement exercises at 8 AM, win
their second straight state baseball championship by
noon, and then bring home their first state boys lacrosse
championship by 6 PM. A full day indeed, and a great day
to be a Stallion.
The Boys Lacrosse team compiled quite an impressive
17-1 record on its way to the school’s first Lacrosse state
title, averaging 14 goals per game while giving away only
4. Ranked #1 in Division II all year, the Stallions were
ranked #3 among all the teams in the state and 9th in
the midwest. Head coach Matt Triplett was also named
Ohio Coach of the Year.
The state semifinal, played at Alumni Stadium, featured
the Stallions against state powerhouse Cincinnati Indian
Hill High School. Led by junior J.T. Blubaugh, the Stallions
came from behind in exciting fashion to make it to the
states. However, Blubaugh–the leading scorer for the
Stallions–underwent an emergency appendectomy only
hours after the semifinal, preventing him from competing
in the final. The Lax Boys were not deterred, putting
together another game plan, and holding off a late rally to
beat Rocky River High School, 8-6, in the championship.
Senior Anthony Ciammaichella scored in each of the
first three periods, and key goals by Matt Chadwick, Tim
Doone, Evan Hoffman, and Patrick McGuire proved to be
the difference in the game. Ross Wanner, the Offensive
MVP of the game, won 15 of 17 face offs–the first 3 goals of
the 2nd half coming directly from these face off wins.
Several of the state champion Stallions earned statewide
recognition for their performance: junior J.T. Blubaugh
and seniors Tyler McClary, Ross Wanner, and Anthony
Ciammaichella were named 1st team All-State; seniors Marcus
Dietz and Patrick McGuire were second team selections. In
addition to these statewide honors, Blubaugh (who has signed
a letter of intent to play at OSU) and Ciammaichella (who will
play next year at Marquette University) earned 1st Team All
American Honors. Several other of these state champs will
continue their Lax careers next year: Patrick McGuire–Towson
University, Jack Slomsky–University of Detroit Mercy, and
Goalie Tyler McClary–Widener University.
