Mike Evans, class of 1972, went from local barber to local
restaurateur to local celebrity.
He recently finished filming the third season of
The Food Network’s
The Great American FoodTruck Race
. After hisWesterville pizza shop,
Michael’s Pizza, burned down 2 years ago he began looking for a way to control his hours
and have flexibility. Spending time with his wife Cyndi, and daughter Sarah, who will be
a freshman at DeSales next year, are very important to him, which made the food truck
concept appealing. He could get back in the kitchen while having flexibility and more
time to spend with his family. While looking in the online classifieds for a food truck,
he found an advertisement fromThe Food Network looking for participants for the new
season of
The Great American FoodTruck Race
. What caught his eye was that the winner of
the show would be awarded a food truck. “I thought, shoot, I’ve got to take a chance on
that. It’s a free food truck,” Evans said. “I really didn’t ever expect to hear back.” After
receiving thousands of applications,The Food Network selected 8 teams to compete in the
show, and Mike was one of them. Mike traveled out to L.A. with fellow DeSales alum Pat
Snyder, and former cook at Michael’s Pizza, Carlo Borgia.
They spent several weeks traveling around in their food truck selling pizzas and subs,
but more importantly, competing for a free food truck. Unfortunately, inWeek 3 they
were eliminated. However, through this experience, Mike connected with local talent
agent Bret Adams. With the help of his agent, Mike has recently filmed a pilot currently
titled “PizzaWars.” While filming the pilot locally, they visited local pizza shopsTAT and
Rubinos. For the show they plan on traveling around the country visiting mom and pop
pizza shops.
While Mike and his crew wait for a network to pick up theTV show, he is finalizing the steps
to open his food truck someplace inWesterville. He is in the process of working with the
city on a permit and hopefully you can visit him soon on the streets ofWesterville. He is
also available to cater private parties and corporate functions with his truck and can provide
a custom menu including items such as pizza, pasta, subs and salads. To get the latest updates
